Mining Journal is building a library of resources to grow industry knowledge around climate change and tool up miners, developers and explorers for the discussions that will dominate agendas for the next decade.

Though the mining industry, like all others, has been left under no illusion that climate change will be a defining part of business going forward, it is yet to fully appreciate how things on site and in the boardroom will likely need to change. The Digging for Climate Change site seeks to establish a foundation for that industry education process.

Alongside theme-driven articles and podcasts, discussion panels and research, Mining Journal is building a library of resources to grow industry knowledge around climate change and tool up miners, developers and explorers for the discussions that will dominate agendas for the next decade.

We will rely mostly on our core partners to populate the library with materials they have themselves created, but this section of the website is home to a range of resources from a diverse set of institutions, consultancies and companies, which all share one thing in common – an understanding of the climate change challenge and a resolve to see the mining sector respond and adapt.

Energy access is becoming increasingly difficult and expensive in many regions of the world, with global energy prices leaping by 260% since 2000. TCFD Good Practice Handbook

In May 2019, the Climate Disclosure Standards Board (CDSB) and the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) published the TCFD Implementation Guide: Using the SASB Standards and CDSB Framework to Enhance Climate-Related Financial Disclosures in Mainstream Reporting. By offering how-to guidance, the TCFD Implementation Guide aims to help companies enhance the robustness, consistency, comparability, and utility of TCFD implementation and reporting through use of CDSB and SASB’s market-tested frameworks, standards and resources.

The energy transition is going to to be absolutely key for miners, together with the shift in focus away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy as the world sets its sights more firmly on zero-emissions targets. Of course, the global demand for minerals will remain during this energy transition, but the risk landscape of the mining industry is likely to undergo radical changes in the process.
